I’ve retired from lutherie, but still like to putter around in the shop.  So I've been making bridges and slotting fretboards.  This set is a cut above the ordinary, made from Bubinga. Bubinga is widely used in Lutherie and is an excellent wood for bridges and fretboards. It's a very hard wood but without the tendency to split that many hard woods show. It has an attractive grain pattern, similar to Rambutan only lighter in color. It's not an oily wood, so there’s no problems with gluing.


 


The 20 slots in the fretboard are the standard .022" width, accurately spaced for the Martin 25.4" scale length.  Its width is 2 5/8" throughout.  The bridge is the standard Martin outline with a 3/32" saddle slot width. Apart from the string spacing, its overall dimensions are virtually the same as Stewmac’s  standard bridge (4923).  (I like to think mine are significantly better than those Stewmac sells; and I know for sure they are better than those you can get from the Far East.) 


 


It also has a particular refinement I often build into my bridges:  the peg holes are in a gentle arc rather than a straight line.  That way, you don’t have six holes lining up through the long grain and inviting a longitudinal split.  (Any repair guy will tell you how often that’s a problem with the Martin-style bridge.)  There’s no effect on intonation, etc.  And it does look kind of cool.  Check out the picture.
