The introduction of the 15 Series in 1997 marked the reintroduction of mahogany top guitars to Martin's line of acoustic guitars. The original 15 Series model paid homage in many aspects to the Style 15 Martin guitars that were incredibly popular in the 1940s. Known as the D-15, this 14-fret Dreadnought acoustic featured a solid mahogany back, top, neck, and sides. At the modest MSRP of just $849, the D-15 was the most affordable solid wood acoustic guitar available by Martin. During the first year of production alone, over 1,000 D-15 models were sold. The incredible popularity of the D-15 led to the eventual expansion of the series that to this day stays true to the first model, incorporating incredible sound, craftsmanship, and affordability.
